DID YOU KNOW?

Aluxes are guardians of Maya land — and this belief is very real and respected across the Yucatán Peninsula and Quintana Roo.

According to Maya tradition, these small spirits protect the jungle, the cenotes, and the fields.

Farmers and shamans would shape them from clay and build them a tiny stone home — a kahtal alux – right on the land, to keep the Alux close and content.

Even the little house near the Cancún-Nizuc bridge (pictured) was built for this reason – a modern reminder that this tradition still shapes real decisions here today.
